This is an attempt to give overall ratings to teams that compete in the UEFA Champions League competition every year. The scoring is a variant of the Elo rating scheme which is most famously used to rank chess players.
(When I was almost done putting this together it occurred to me that other people may have done something similar. Club Elo also has rankings for club teams and there are also rankings for national teams online as well).

How scoring works exactly:

• Start the 1992-1993 season giving each team a rating of 1500
• For each match update each team's score according to the basic Elo formula found on wikipedia using K = 20. Why 20? Because I wanted a constant and 20 is a great constant.
• For each season, teams that didn't play in the previous Champions League season start with a score of 1500. Teams that did play in the previous season start with the larger of 1500 and their last rating.
• Margin of victory does not count: only wins, losses and draws do.
• Penalty shootouts are not considered. A game that is even after extra time is considered a draw for the rankings as of right now.

To do all this I used:

• Python scripts to compile the match data from wikipedia as well as to compute the scores over time
• The D3.js library for visualizations
• The jQuery library for a general sense of life-easiness
• Some basic JavaScript
• My trusty editor: Notepad++
• CSS
• I started with the code I found at Cotrino Starpaths, which was one of the examples on the D3.js page and had functionality very close to what I was looking for.

This is not necessarily the finished product. I'm currently thinking of ways to objectively test the methodology without imposing my opinions too much. Also, there may be some problems with the data, e.g. some teams may be showing up under multiple similar names or I might be missing some matches. I have intentions of improving it but I won't make any promises.
