Do forwards really take better penalty kicks?

During the recently concluded World Cup there were several penalty shootouts. Amongst people that I interact with, it seemed to me that when a defender missed a kick it would be attributed to his position whereas when an attacking player missed a kick the position that they played didn't come into the analysis.

My intution was that defenders convert penalties just as frequently as attacking players in World Cup shootouts. I figured that anyone at the World Cup was an extremely highly-skilled player and to be chosen to take a kick meant that one had already been vetted by the team's coaching staff.

Anyhow, penalty shootouts have only been a part of the World Cup since 1982 and all the data is available on wikipedia. All I had to do was use the positions from the match reports to get some conversion rates for each position. Simple enough.

For a few players, the distinction between the different positions of my choosing (Defender, Midfielder, Forward) were not exactly straightforward but I think it all comes out in the wash.

Anyhow, the results are below:

PositionConversion Raten
Forwards0.80667
Defenders0.68363
Midfielders0.682110

So it seems that forwards do convert penalties more frequently than other players by a non-negligible margin. Also interesting that defenders and midfielders seem to have converted penalties at effectively identical rates.

Once I had the data, it was trivial to rank countries that have participated in World Cup penalty shootouts by their conversion rates:

TeamConversion Raten
Belgium15
Paraguay15
South Korea15
Germany14
West Germany0.92914
Sweden0.8336
Costa Rica0.810
Uruguay0.85
Argentina0.78323
France0.7520
Bulgaria0.754
Greece0.754
Japan0.754
Ukraine0.754
Italy0.73719
Romania0.72711
Brasil0.72218
Spain0.71414

Netherlands0.66712
Portugal0.65
England0.514
Ghana0.54
Chile0.45
Yugoslavia0.45
Mexico0.2867
Switzerland03

And lastly, I wasn't expecting to really find anything here but here are the conversion rates for the different tournaments since shootouts have been used at the World Cup:

YearConversion Raten
19860.77827
20100.77818
19820.75012
19900.73738
20140.72236
19980.71428
20060.69733
20020.68419
19940.62129

Thoughts

Well, it seems that I was wrong: forwards do seem to be more effective at taking penalty kicks.
